The AMCE African Healthcare Forum 2024: Pioneering Excellence in African Healthcare
Bringing together global and African experts to shape the future of African healthcare and combat the rise in non-communicable diseases
Wednesday, 7 February 2024; Abuja, Nigeria: The African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja (AMCE Abuja), a quaternary level multi-speciality medical institution developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and King’s College Hospital, London, is proud to announce the inaugural AMCE African Health Forum 2024, a groundbreaking event that will bring together healthcare stakeholders from across Africa and international experts to address the pressing challenges posed by the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases on the continent.
The event will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, on 21 February, with high-level speakers including Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank and the visionary behind the AMCE initiative, which is being developed in collaboration with King’s College Hospital, London (KCH).
The conference will also provide an exclusive opportunity to showcase trailblazing projects under the AMCE initiative, the first being the AMCE Abuja and secondly, a medical and nursing school which would also be developed in Abuja by Afreximbank in collaboration with Kings College London (KCL), as KCL’s first Africa Campus, to support the production of quality medical personnel in Africa.
The AMCE initiative seeks to develop medical centres of excellence in the five (5) sub-regions of Africa to address the current issues of underfunded, underequipped, and inaccessible healthcare facilities, where care for both complex and basic cases is often met through medical tourism to countries like India, the USA, and the UK. The AMCE Abuja, is the first of these facilities that Afreximbank is developing across the continent under the initiative. The AMCE Abuja entails the development and operationalization of a quaternary level multi – specialty 500 bed hospital facility to serve the entire African continent focusing on Oncology, Haematology and Cardiology, in addition to general care capabilities.
The AMCE Abuja’s mission is underpinned by its commitment to collaborate with both international and African partners. The AMCE African Health Forum 2024 will be an opportunity to discover the inspiring vision behind this pioneering project, highlighting key milestones achieved and presenting exciting opportunities for stakeholders to actively participate in this transformative healthcare journey.

About the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)
The African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja (AMCE Abuja), a quaternary-level multi-speciality medical institution developed by Afreximbank in collaboration with King’s College Hospital, London, aims to revolutionise healthcare in Africa. Established to address critical gaps, the AMCE Abuja is committed to providing world-class care through innovative research, development, and education. The centre, headquartered in Abuja, will offer comprehensive services in oncology, haematology, cardiovascular care, and general healthcare across the continent, with plans for expansion. The primary goal is to curb medical tourism by offering advanced procedures such as stem cell transplantation and state-of-the-art treatments for various diseases. The construction phase, supported by global partners, precedes a phased rollout over six years, evolving into a 500-bed facility.
By addressing healthcare brain drain and reducing medical tourism, the AMCE Abuja creates employment opportunities across medical and non-medical sectors. Following the groundbreaking ceremony in December 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, the AMCE Abuja is set to commence operations in early 2025. This flagship facility in Abuja is a key part of Afreximbank’s network of healthcare facilities, actively countering brain drain, reducing medical tourism, and fostering employment opportunities. The vision for the AMCE initiative is to shape a healthier and more educated future for Africa.
